Solstad shipping AS was established in 1964 by Captain Johannes Solstad, who had his background as Master Mariner and as Ship Superintendent in the shipowning company of 'Den Norske amerikalinje'.
Company headquarters is located in Skudeneshavn Norway, and has subsidiary offices in Aberdeen, Brazil, Singapore and Malaysia.

First ship of the Company was purchased 15th September 1964, and was given the name of M/V "SOLDROTT".
Up to 1971 the Company purchased several elder linerships from a.o. Wilhelm Wilhemsen.
Mainly, these vessels mainly became engaged in the Far East.

In 1971 the Company received its first newbuilding (the 2nd ship with the name "SOLDROTT") from Warnow Werft in the former East Germany. During the period from 1971 to 1979, the Company received 6 semi-container vessels varying in sizes from 11000 to 14000 TDW, all build at shipyards in the former East Germany.

With the delivery of the first of series of 4 supplyvessels from a newbuilding yard in Netherlands, the Company in 1974 the Company started its engagement in offshore sector.
Later the Company has received one supplyvessel after the other, and today this fleet of ships is the backbone of the Company.

In 1984, in connection with long-term contracts (C/Ps) for the supplyvessels "Normand Draupne" and "Normand Mjolne" on the Statfjord offshore oilfield (Mobil), Solstad Shipping as one the first Norwegian shipowners introduced a system for safety and quality assurance (HSE&QA).
However, in international shipping and specially during the later years a strong focus has been placed on safety & quality assurance, a fact that resulted in the introduction of IMO ISM-Code and STCW-95 Convention.
During the same period the operators in oil related activities developed very strict and comprehensive requirements to quality and safety, a fact that also the shipowning companies have had to relate to.

During the spring of 1994 SOLSTAD SHIPPING AS decided to commence the implementation of SMS (Safety Management System) certification by Det Norske Veritas. In March 1996, DNV successfully carried out a "Preliminary Audit" of Company administration at Skudeneshavn Norway.
Since 1984, after the implementation of Company system for safety & quality assurance, the Company has emphasized the motivating of the employees, as well as to create a positive attitude toward the implementation of safety & quality assurance onboard and among shore personnel. During the later years this work has produced excellent results ao. through reporting of non-conformities, accidents and near-accidents, as well as with a thoroughly implemented P&E (Protection & Environment) system/work onboard the vessels.

In 2003 the Company further became upgraded in accordance with the new ISO Standard: NS-EN ISO 9001-2000.

In 2004 the Company upraged in accordance with the new ISPS Standard, inclusive certification of CSO and SSO.

In 2006 the Company once again upgraded in accordance with the new ISO Standard: NS-EN ISO 14001.

The Company has used- and intend also in the future to use a considerable amount of resources on training in HSE&QA-work.
